So-So Doesn't Cut It

Mike Shula felt he had the Alabama program back on track.

This sentence from the AP story about Mike Shula, the University of Alabama's fired football coach is exactly why our cute coach needed to go. A decent man by all accounts, Shula didn't recognize what was going wrong and therefore, couldn't fix it. His ego is bruised, but his family is secure financially unlike the typical family who must struggle when the main breadwinner loses a job. The challenge ahead is to find an experienced, seasoned coach of the first rank. The University, her fans, students and alumni deserve nothing less than this.

I saw Joe Namath play high school ball as a kid, followed his career to Alabama and became a huge Bear Bryant fan. I've been sorry to see the state of affairs there.

I hate to say it, but somehow this post reminds me of another elephant in the room who thinks things are going better than the are.

Cheers!

I had a crush on Joe when I was in high school. I spent many a Sunday afternoon watching the Bear Bryant Show during Joe's time at Bama, and later, my loyalty spilled over to the Jets.

I love elephants but not the big one you refer to.

Do you collect elephants, Sheila, like Bill Parcells? You know, only the ones with their trunk pointing up - so the luck doesn't run out - and facing into the room.

I was in school WITH Joe Namath. In fact, I was in the crowd that supported Bear Bryant's decision to not let him play in the Bowl game after he violated the team rules!! The Bear knew how to be tough - that's what's missing in today's coaches.
