Clerk Sweeps out the Bad Guy

Before I read about it the Springfield News-Leader, I saw the video on TV and maybe you did too. Springfield has experienced a string of convenience store robberies lately like other cities, and this really isn’t big news. But when the robber attempted to do his bad on one Springfieldian clerk, she took after him with a broom. Cops and store honchos say this is probably not the best course of action when confronted by a robber, but it worked this time.

I guess I can understand the reluctance to hand over the money if the robber fails to brandish a weapon or only shows up with a BB gun as he did at another store. Of course, y’all know Missouri is the Show Me State. Any serious robber best come prepared if he’s expecting the cash.

It now looks like the cops have a suspect who will likely be charged later today.

show me dammit, mace would work well also.

I like the symbolic broom over mace but I guess that'd work. I hope I never have to weigh what I'd do in this situation.

I think maybe I'd throw some piping hot nacho cheese on 'em.

Once upon a long time ago, when I was young and stupid, I would have done the same thing. Now that I'm older, I'd probably still do the same thing.

Please note: I said I was older, not smarter. Besides, I'm too busy. Robbing me won't make anyone any richer, it'll just add to the amount of paper work I have to do before the day is over, which will ultimately serve no purpose save to make me cranky!

Did you read the story the other day about the 12 year old (I think 12...) who hid in a closet when a thief broke into his house. When the thief got to the closet, the kid cracked him twice with a baseball bat and dialed 911. The cops showed up to find the bad guy laid out on the floor.

Years ago when I was living in Chicago working in the candy business, one of the stores in my district was held up. We had one old lady working behind the candy counter whose purse was snatched and used to holdthe cash register money as part of the robbery. She not only chased him out of the candy store, but she grabbed hold of her purse while running and he dragged her down the sidewalk. She was bruised up, but she did get her purse and the money back. She was a tough bird.

T-Dude,
I saw that story too. I reckon a ball-bat tops a broom. Pretty brave kid.

PSS,
There are some tough characters out there not willing to kowtow to any threat even if they should. I think when you reach a certain age, you start to think "I'm not taking this crap any more." Not all oldsters are frail and meek.

Kind of story I love. (My family each kept a bat under our bed)

Diane, I hope that your family didn't use the bats on each other!

That store clerk was a very brave lady. Unfortunately incidents like this seem to be the norm now. We have had several here in England too. It's frightening.
